A thermo-mechanically consistent Burnett regime continuum flow equations without Chapman-Enskog expansion

چکیده
Chapman-Enskog expansion is the orthodox approach to derive continuum flow models from Boltzmann’s kinetic equation for dilute gases. Beyond the Navier-Stokes-Fourier order, these models known as Burnett hydrodynamic-regime equations violate a number of fundamental mechanical and thermodynamic principles in their original forms. This has generated a widely investigated problem in the kinetic theory of gases. In this short article, we derive a Burnett hydrodynamic-regime continuummodel that is systematically consistent with all known mechanical and thermodynamic principles without using any series’ expansion. Close comparison with the conventional Burnett hydrodynamic set of equations is considered and their linear stabilities around an equilibrium point under small perturbations are presented.

A Relaxation Scheme for Solving the Boltzmann Equation Based on the Chapman-Enskog Expansion
In [16] a visco-elastic relaxation system, called the relaxed Burnett system, was proposed by Jin and Slemrod as a moment approximation to the Boltzmann equation. The relaxed Burnett system is weakly parabolic, has a linearly hyperbolic convection part, and is endowed with a generalized entropy inequality. It agrees with the solution of the Boltzmann equation up to the Burnett order via the Cha...

In an early approach, we proposed a kinetic model with multiple translational temperature [K. Xu, H. Liu and J. Jiang, Phys. Fluids 19, 016101 (2007)], to simulate non-equilibrium flows. In this paper, instead of using three temperatures in x−, y−, and z-directions, we are going to further define the translational temperature as a second-order symmetric tensor. Based on a multiple stage BGK-typ...

متن کاملExact Hydrodynamics of the Lattice BGK Equation
We apply the projection operator formalism to the problem of determining the asymptotic behavior of the lattice BGK equation in the hydrodynamic limit. As an alternative to the more usual Chapman-Enskog expansion, this approach offers many benefits. Most remarkably, it produces absolutely exact, though non-Markovian, hydrodynamic difference equations as an intermediate step. These are accurate ...
